“This painting was based on an abandoned circus train I once saw while on a walk in Venice, Florida, where I came upon the graveyard of an old railroad site. Trains like these were once a world of their own, filled with the lives of all the fascinating circus people who lived on board. As nighthawks darted overhead, one could almost hear the ringmaster, invoking an audience long gone: “Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, children of all ages…”
I intentionally painted the moon the same size as the logo on the abandoned circus train proclaiming “The Greatest Show on Earth”. What really is the greatest show on earth? Is it the moon? Or is it nature itself, as suggested by the overgrown train tracks, overtaking the remnants of the circus.” Robert Bateman
