“Sometimes we North Americans are very egocentric about the virtues of our culture. The more I travel, however, the more I am impressed with many wonderful aspects of the philosophy of other cultures. One very special one is embodied on the island of Bali. They seem to be successful in blending their ancient traditions, religion and way of life with the contemporary world. They seem to care about harmony, nature and aesthetics. Birgit and I were told of a sacred grove which we visited just before dusk. Three species of egrets – great, intermediate and cattle were involved in the excitement of settling on a roost for the night. Their exuberant ascending forms seem to embody the spiritual quality of birds.” Robert Bateman
