Excursion – Cougar and Kits
Robert Bateman Hand Signed Artist Proof 24″ x 36″

“It is late afternoon and the sun is glowing through the tops of the Douglas firs. It is time for the mother cougar and her kits to venture out for the evening hunt. In spite of increased human population these animals are doing surprisingly well in the Pacific northwest. This is probably because of the abundance of deer, the primary food species, and to the secretive habits of the cougar. This particular scene shows an ecosystem with which I am familiar. In fact, it surrounds our home. On southwestern-facing slopes which pick up the afternoon sun, one finds the Garry oak savannah and open parkland with grasses and wildflowers under the trees. In the valleys and northeastern slopes grows the Douglas fir, cedar, and hemlock association. This blend is just right for the cougar family, providing shelter and cover for rest plus open areas for good viewing. It is also a perfect place for the kits to play. Robert Bateman
