Little Blue Heron

“It was the slaty blues, grays and purples in the bird and the sky that I enjoyed playing with in this painting. I also tried to repeat the spindly, sinuous elegance of the bird in the twisted, red cedar branches.
Like most herons, the little blue nests in trees in colonies where it may combine with several other species. The nesting colony scene is one of gorgeous disharmony with constant flutterings, disputes and squabbles. The female little blue heron compounds the problems by flirting with other males more than she does her own mate. The little blue is not a miniature of the great blue, but is more like an egret with the ability to flash and spread a fine spray of plumes.” Robert Bateman
