“This old mill has stood above its reflection in the pond for 200 years. The pond that makes the head to run the mill is, of course, above the dam. It and the open water below the mill have always been favourite places for waterfowl and other wildlife. It has also been one of my favourite places since my younger days. My trips to the Carolinian forest area of southern Ontario would take me to this area in the spring. The air would be filled with the songs of warblers, tanagers and other migrants. The woods would be full of trilliums and other forest flowers. Through the years, however, I came to visit the mill and its ponds in the winter, particularly during the Christmas bird count. My artistic eye and heart was even more moved by the powerful abstract shapes of snow and mill water and by the strong restrained colours that suggested the lives of my pioneer ancestors.
I felt that this would be a fitting subject for the 25th anniversary of Mill Pond Press, where I have had such a long and pleasurable relationship, just as I have had with the mill.” Robert Bateman
