“Our calendar this year contains a collection of paintings both old and new featuring birds of all shapes, sizes and colours inhabiting various environments across Canada.
There is no question in my mind that the world would be a better place if everyone was a birdwatcher. It is not that birdwatchers are more virtuous than the average person (but they might be) – it is that birders pay more attention to nature. With increasing distractions from the entertainment and digital world, the real world could go downhill and we wouldn’t notice. I think we have all heard about the canary in the coal mine.
I have experienced endless pleasure and amazement in observing birds, from my own back yard to all over the world and needless to say I have experienced equal pleasure in depicting them in all their endless variety in my art. Most birders I know are environmentalists and some are activists in protecting the world of nature. The final reason that birding matters is that birders get to know the names of the birds which of course helps to keep track of trends in population and therefore our environmental health.” – Robert Bateman
