Woodworkers – Pileated Woodpeckers

“I have been lucky. The different places I have lived during the last four decades have been in the realm of pileated woodpeckers. In my view, if pileated woodpeckers live there, it must be a good place. This means having a reasonably significant tract of forest with a variety of species and a large number of mature trees, including old dead and dying individuals. These provide sources of food and places to nest. I regard the pileated as the king of woodpeckers with its large size, striking black and white plumage and red crown. The “king” has an entirely red crown and red moustache while the “queen” has the back half of the crown red and a black moustache.” Robert Bateman
